Is there a cure for tinnitus, if not, is it the end of the world?

Hello Folks.

You have come to this page seeking out the answer to this burning question, ‘Is there a cure for tinnitus?’

My answer sadly is a big – NO! Is There a cure for tinnitus?

As I am in the healthcare field constantly working with medications, I have yet to come across a drug that is registered or indicated specifically to cure tinnitus(constant ringing, whistling or buzzing noises in the ear). Though, I have talked previously about trials being done on new molecules, nothing is as yet a confirmed “curative.”

From the side of complementary medication, it is the same. There is no cure but rather various treatments or strategies that can reduce the intensity of the tinnitus that one has.

So, is it the End of the World for me?

NOT AT ALL!

Never Give up, For that is just the place that the time and tide will turn.” By Harriet Beecher Stowe

I live by and believe strongly in the above quote. It reminds me that there is always Hope. Especially when things are looking so bleek and dull. This is a time when you must not give-in. Push Forward and have Faith.

This is what I believe helps me to deal with my tinnitus. So, if there is a message I want you to take home from here, it’s this:

Don’t Let Tinnitus rule your life, you should be the one making up the rules.”

I use some basic pointers, to remind me that I am control in my life. I will not let Tinnitus stop me from doing anything. Especially if I know that there is no cure available. I may get frustrated at times, but I will not get despondent and throw in the towel.

If you would permit, I would like to share these 5 Basic Tips  of Surviving Tinnitus with you. They are by no means caste in stone. It’s what helps me on a daily basis. Perhaps one or two tips may come in handy for you. Who Knows?

You will never know until you try it, right?

Right, lets move on!

1.You are UniqueIs there a cure for Tinnitus

No two people are the same. We all have unique personalities and deal with things differently. When I initially started looking for answers for ‘curing ‘ my tinnitus, I was over-whelmed and filled with anxiety to say the least.

I visited tons of sites and read article upon article in a quest to find that ONE solution for the ringing in my ears. Eventually it hit me out of nowhere!

I had to learn to know myself. I realized that whilst doing certain things helped some people with their tinnitus, it did not do the same for me. I had to know myself. Try things out myself, and not expect it to work because it worked for someone else.

This is why I started this site. To offer you different options. Not every single one will work. This is the thing when it comes to dealing with tinnitus. It’s a case of trial and error.

So remember, do not be hard on yourself when things don’t work.

Love yourself and thank yourself for being strong, and for facing this challenge. Just take your time and try out all options, until you find what works for you, then go with it.

2. Understand TinnitusIs There a cure for tinnitus

Just the fact of knowing that tinnitus is a symptom rather than a disease makes me feel less tensed up. I understand a symptom is a result of something, so therefore, something can certainly be done.

I was told that my tinnitus is a result of Meniere’s Disease. Which meant that it is treatable and can be controlled. Yipee!!!

By no means will it be easy and till today, it’s still a challenge. However, my tinnitus is more well managed now, than before. Simply, because I understood that it is a result of something and not a ‘disease’ which put tinnitus in a much lighter perspective and made it easier to face.

Your tinnitus may be as a result of exposure to loud noise, or a viral infection or due to TMJ(Temporamandibular Joint), or whatever else it may be.

Just remember there is a cause for it, and it can, and will be, controlled by you.

3.Mind Over Matter

Knowing that tinnitus is a symptom is a great start. Now it’s about your mind. Training your mind!Is There a cure for tinnitus

What happens when something new happens in our life, whether it’s good or bad?

We are initially overwhelmed or shocked and our mind needs to register as to what has happened. You don’t become adjusted to it right away , am I right ?

This is exactly what happens to our mind when you first experience the ringing, whistling or roaring noises of tinnitus. Apart from the “misfiring” of impulses that takes place within our brains, (if you would like to know more, check out my article titled, Tinnitus and the Brain),  the mind is overly excited and you are in a state of either panic, shock or anxiety.

This is fine and I am sure a lot of you have been through it on more than one occasion.

What I find makes it easier, is to BE-AWARE of the sounds and make it a part of you.

What!!!Are you Crazy??

I am sure this is what you guys are thinking right now. How can I give attention to noises that are driving me up the wall? Is the point not to ignore it ?

Hear me out on this one.

I know that maskers , like fan noises and music or white noise have their place for tinnitus treatment. I am not saying not to use them. But slowly, in between, take a few minutes to actually hear the noise that is bothering you and say to yourself, these words, “this noise is not so Bad at ALL, it is not bothering me, I can live with it.” Saying it with conviction does help too.

Doing this I believe, allows the brain to interpret the sound as a more “positive” one, rather than a “negative” one. This makes it less foreign and therefore the brain will give it less attention.

Does this makes sense?

Sure it might not help for everyone, but give it a go anyway and let me know what happens.

3. Don’t Listen to the Naysayers

There are over 20 different noises that are associated with tinnitus. These range from ringing, roaring, hissing, buzzing, whistling and so on…

Don’t worry if your noise is not listed here, the main point is that tinnitus is REAL. It is the brain’s perception of noises. It is heard only by the person suffering from it and not anybody else, but it does not mean that it is not there.

So if anyone ever tells you, its all in your imagination or that you are seeking attention, then tell them where to get off.

You and 20million other people are not making this up.

4. ” Sorry, you have have to live with it, NOTHING can be done.”

If you ask some people , is there a cure for tinnitus? and they say NO! I can handle it .

But, when I hear doctors, specialists, colleagues and even family tell me that “NOTHING can done for your tinnitus”,I get so angry and heated up.

First of all, the last thing you want to tell any tinnitus sufferer is that nothing can be done. This just increases the persons anxiety and makes them feel that there is no hope, and spirals him/her down the wrong path.

Secondly, there is always something that can be done for Tinnitus. Whether you try mindfulness meditation, yoga, relaxation therapies, just listen to music or watch TV, you are doing something. And if it works for you, that is great.

Remember keep pushing and don’t give up.

5. You are not alone

I believe that one of the things that makes me feel more confident in dealing with my tinnitus, is knowing that I am not alone in this battle. Is there a cure for tinnitus

I am fortunate enough to have some family members who are very supportive and understanding. My colleagues at work, have been accomadating and this makes things so much more easier.

After speaking to people who have told to me about their tinnitus experiences, I realized how lucky I really am to have this positive support structure. Some people are all alone and I really feel for them. I can only imagine what it feels like.

Not only are you dealing with a mental challenge, but you are doing it all alone.

I would like each and every one of you out there to know that you are not alone. This site is for you. It is for you to voice your thoughts and share your feelings.

I am here to listen to you and to help wherever I can. So make use of it and ask whatever is on your mind.

Conclusion

So is there a cure for tinnitus? In a matter of speaking, yes. These 5tips above will help you with your tinnitus. I have tried them and used them, and I have found that it works. It does not “cure” the tinnitus. It keeps it at bay, which to me is the closest thing to a cure.

Before I leave you, I know that deep down inside each and everyone of you, is the desire to conquer the tinnitus. I thought I’d include a YouTube video that I found, to motivate you and remind you that you are special and unique and that you can beat this.

This video can also help to motivate you and get yourself all ready to achieve any other goals or dreams that your heart desires for the New Year.

It can be devastating when you hear from the orthodox specialists that your disease is incurable. Doctors only know how to treat the symptoms of a disease but few of them actually know what true health is.

Like tinnitus I have a chronic disease that is incurable and that led me to look for why that we can regenerate our health.

This led me to water fasting which is an ancient practice to regain health. It is not something that I have tried, but I am doing my investigation.

      Hi Viljoen

Yes it can certainly be a blow when you hear that nothing can be done about your disease or condition.

With the greatest of respect to doctors, I personally think that there is a place for science and a place for natural health. In lots of instances, conventional medicine really helped whereby alternative health did not.

My point is that if medicine does not work, this does not mean that nothing will. I believe that our amazing bodies have got the intrinsic ability of healing. We must not give up, until we find a way.

I am sorry to hear about your condition. This water fasting sounds very interesting. I wish you all the luck in this path and hope it makes a difference. Please let me know how it goes and don’t ever give up.

      Regards and Best Wishes

Those were awesome tips! While I myself may not suffer from this affliction; I do have an incurable blood disease, and the 5 tips you provided can fall within mine as well. If I were to perceive it in that way! With that said it’s written style displayed great understanding for anyone that may have an affliction of any kind.

I get the ringing in my ears from time to time, however, it’s never been a constant problem for me. I really like the quote by Harriet Beecher Stowe. I have found that quote to be true. So many times when I’ve reached what I perceive as my limit, and I’m ready to give up, the next day I find success. This is why it is so important to never give up, regardless of the circumstances.

You are certainly right that every person will respond differently to various forms of treatment. I’ve had chronic issues that I’ve dealt with, and there is definitely no panacea (although, I wish there was). I have found a unique combination of things that have helped me to move forward.
Aside from the actual difficulties per se, your article is very comforting and motivational. I really appreciate you sharing this. My quality of life has already improved as a result of reading this post. Thanks very much and all the best to you in 2016.

      HI there

Its good to know that your ringing in the ears is not a chronic thing.

I absolutely agree with you on not giving up. Sometimes, things may seem hard and tough and that you have had enough. This is when you should stick it out as you may be near the end.

Taking combination therapy for your condition is perfect. Our bodies are designed to respond to not just one particular treatment or “drug.” As long as it works, this is what is most important.

I am glad that you found this article motivational and comforting.

Thank for stopping by and wishing you the very best that 2016 has to offer.

What a great article. I never knew some people had tinnitus permanently. I grew up in Africa which is endemic with malaria. I caught malaria several times and when ever I was treated with quinine, I got tinnitus for a few days. It was very disturbing for me every time it happened and as you said, there were always people who said it was in my head and sometimes I believed them. It is a good thing that you have come to accept your reality and your post will help many people accept theirs too.

    • Roopesh

      Hi There

      Thank you for sharing.

Wow, malaria is a real nasty one. I know about quinine as well.In addition to malaria prophylaxis it can be used as a muscle relaxant. It’s side effects can also be quite unpleasant.

Accepting the tinnitus, certainly helps to deal with it a little better. I would like to help as many people as I can by talking about tinnitus through this site.

Take Care of yourself.and may you have a great 2016

I am defiantly using the advice in this site more often. I suffer from Tinnitus myself. While I am a bit annoyed to learn there is no cure for it, it is reassuring to learn more ways to deal with it. I would definitely recommend this to other patients seeking methods to dealing with the same problem I do. Good job

    • Roopesh

      Hi Graham

I am happy that you enjoyed your visit here. It makes me feel that I am doing something right on this website.

I know the feeling of getting annoyed, especially when I first started to do research to find out exactly what can be done for tinnitus and that no cure exist.

As you said, there is a lot that can be done, and I will be talking about more as time goes by.

If you would like to know anything else, or just need to have a chat, please do not hesitate to contact me.

May you have a great 2016.

Your article is very inspiring. Your positive attitude and your strength to move forward is wonderful. Reading about Tinnitus and how there is no cure helped me to understand some of the struggles that those who deal with Tinnitus have. What are some ways your co-workers and others can help those who have Tinnitus deal with their symptoms?

Thank you for writing this article. You are unique and inspiring, Roopesh!

    • Roopesh

      Hello Thomas

Thank you for such uplifting words. I really appreciate it.

It really makes a difference when the people at work can understand your plight with tinnitus. In my case, people have been patient and repeated himself when I have difficulty hearing them. They do NOT get angry or frustrated and this makes me feel less of a “burden” or “annoyance.” around them and more comfortable and at ease.

Since I am permanently deaf in the right ear, they have actually become accommodating to the point as standing as far as possible to my left hand side when talking.

Look I wear a hearing aid, so that gives people an indication. In other tinnitus sufferers, not everyone has a hearing aid. In fact, it would seem that everything is okay when you are talking to them. I would suggest to the sufferer to firstly let the person know of your condition. The part of other person is to understand that ringing, whistling noises are REAL, and not a made-up story and therefore, they should exercise understanding and patience when communicating.

Once again, thanks for your compliments. It makes me feel like I am doing something right.

My best friend has tinnitus and she gets very frustrated at times. And I can tell when it is getting on her nerves because she is a bit grouchy. She finds that background noise like having a fan run seems to help, although I don’t know why. The doctors also told here there isn’t a cure. I will be sure to share these tips with here.
